A Social Services Urban Village

Constructed in 1910, this building was originally used by the Sunset Door and Sash Company. The vernacular style structure is the oldest massive brick industrial complex still standing in Stockton.  Remodeled in 1916 for Sears, Roebuck and Company, it became the only mail order distribution center in California until 1927. This building is Stockton Historic Landmark No. 41 and was designated by the Stockton City Council in 1986.

It wasn’t like I was seeking a project. We were completing Eden Square, and I was looking forward to telling its story on the lecture circuit before taking on anything new. Then I got a call from a local real estate agent soliciting my interest in a “troubled property.” Troubled was an understatement.

Daring ideas are like chessmen moving forward. They may be beaten, but the may start a winning game.
